A Polynomial Time Algorithm for Deciding Branching Bisimilarity on Totally Normed BPA
نویسنده
چکیده
Strong bisimilarity on normed BPA is polynomial-time decidable, while weak bisimilarity on totally normed BPA is NP-hard. It is natural to ask where the computational complexity of branching bisimilarity on totally normed BPA lies. This paper confirms that this problem is polynomial-time decidable. To our knowledge, in the presence of silent transitions, this is the first bisimilarity checking algorithm on infinite state systems which runs in polynomial time. This result spots an instance in which branching bisimilarity and weak bisimilarity are both decidable but lie in different complexity classes (unless NP = P), which is not known before. The algorithm takes the partition refinement approach and the final implementation can be thought of as a generalization of the previous algorithm of Czerwiński and Lasota [10,7]. However, unexpectedly, the correctness of the algorithm cannot be directly generalized from previous works, and the correctness proof turns out to be subtle. The proof depends on the existence of a carefully defined refinement operation fitted for our algorithm and the proposal of elaborately developed techniques, which are quite different from previous works.

Branching Bisimilarity between Finite-State Systems and BPA or Normed BPP Is Polynomial-Time Decidable
In this paper we present polynomial time algorithms deciding branching bisimilarity between finite-state systems and several classes of infinite-state systems: BPA and normed BPP. The algorithm for BPA improves a previous one given by Kučera and Mayr, while the one for normed BPP demonstrates the polynomial-time decidability of the problem, which is unknown previously. The proof style follows a...
متن کاملNormed BPA vs. Normed BPP Revisited
We present a polynomial-time algorithm deciding bisimilarity between a normed BPA process and a normed BPP process. This improves the previously known exponential upper bound by Černá, Křet́ınský, Kučera (1999). The algorithm relies on a polynomial bound for the “finite-state core” of the transition system generated by the BPP process. The bound is derived from the “prime form” of the underlying...

This habilitation thesis gives an overview of five papers of the author in the area of verification, in particular, in the study of computational complexity of equivalence checking problems and related areas. The first of these papers, Sawa, Jančar: Equivalences on Finite-State Systems are PTIME-hard (2005), shows that deciding any relation between bisimulation equivalence (bisimilarity) and tr...
متن کاملNormed Processes, Unique Decomposition, and Complexity of Bisimulation Equivalences
We propose a decision procedure for a general class of normed commutative process rewrite systems and their induced bisimulation equivalences. Our technique is inspired by the polynomial-time algorithm for strong bisimilarity on normed Basic Parallel Processes (BPP), developed by Hirshfeld, Jerrum and Moller. As part of our framework we present a generic unique decomposition result, which we ob...
